Senior Housing
Piacenza, PI
The building in question, a structure used for senior housing, consists of
four floors above ground and an underground car park. The moderate
height of the building is closely linked to Piacenza, a city characterized
mainly by low-rise buildings.
The open courtyard typology reflects the traditional architectural
characteristics of the context and allows for better integration between
public and private spaces.
There are two types of housing units inside the building: studio flat of 32m2
(60%) and one bedroom apartment of 46m2 (40%), ranging from the first
floor above ground up to the fourth, distributed via an external balcony.
Both public and private services have been included on the ground floor
for those who reside inside the building; a gymnasium in the projecting
body, an outpatient clinic, a games room, a space used for bike storage, a
waste room, a technical room, a reception room and finally a restaurant
open to residents and non-residents, on the east side of the building
directly connected to the pre-existing footpath.
Specifically, the need emerged to respond to a precise housing request
that concerns the Italian population over 65. With a view to paying
particular attention to energy sustainability criteria, relation to the existing
context, flexibility and usability, the intervention in question attempts to
respond to the needs of users, i.e. self-sufficient elderly people.
As already mentioned above, the intervention is included in a program of
redevelopment intentions.
